A sociologia econômica moderna començou na Espanha
Juan de Mariana (1536-1624), a major thinker of the Spanish renaissance, was a founder of economic science. This study of his writings and legacy appeared in 1928 and has not been reprinted until now. Prof. Fr. Laures explores his thinking on value, commerce, money, entrepreneurship, labor, taxes, and more, and demonstrates that he is a major if overlooked founder of economic science and classical liberalism.
Trained in the tradition of Thomas Aquinas, Juan de Mariana made huge advances in not only economics but also in law and sociology.
He was famously jailed for going too far in his explorations of the illegitimacy of the state and what people might consider doing about it. But even in prison, he made major contributions. Tenacious, brilliant, innovative, and daring, Mariana provokes even today.
This is an essential volume for understanding the history of economic thought and the contribution of the Late Scholastics generally. Laures is thorough but critical of Mariana's more extreme conclusions, and seeks to render his thought in a way that is more politically acceptable, but that doesn't diminish the value of the exposition, which is rare and much welcome.

A crise da educação pública
Mr. Gatto quit as a public school teacher in order to stop harming kids. He had discovered that institutional schooling is designed to prevent the natural genius of children from emerging. Public schools impose a state of permanent incompletion to our kids, by teaching habit-training, not intellectual development. The power elite deliberately suppresses independent and critical thinking, to make us obedient citizens and consumers. Gatto, author of the best-selling Weapons of Mass Instruction, Dumbing Us Down, and The Underground History of American Education, discusses how the twenty elite boarding schools teach their students according to ancient principles, and homeschoolers and unschoolers are doing the same.

Hitler's Jewish Soldiers
The Untold Story of Nazi Racial Laws and Men of Jewish Descent in the German Military
Bryan Mark Rigg
Modern War Studies
Paper ISBN 978-0-7006-1358-8, $16.95
On the murderous road to "racial purity" Hitler encountered unexpected detours, largely due to his own crazed views and inconsistent policies regarding Jewish identity. After centuries of Jewish assimilation and intermarriage in German society, he discovered that eliminating Jews from the rest of the population was more difficult than he'd anticipated. As Bryan Mark Rigg shows in this provocative new study, nowhere was that heinous process more fraught with contradiction and confusion than in the German military.

O sentido da liberdade
George Orwell wrote, "If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear."

Germany and Its Industrial Rise: Due to No Copyright
August 18, 2010 by Jeffrey Tucker
SHARE IT:Share Email ThisI had known that copyright killed music in Britain in the 18th and 19th century and that the absence of copyright laws in Germany had encouraged its remarkable artistic culture. I had not known that the same is true of books generally. But this article details remarkable new research showing that this was indeed the case. The author of the research in question is Eckhard Höffner and his book is Geschichte und Wesen des Urheberrechts – not available yet in English.
Quoting Spiegel:
Indeed, only 1,000 new works appeared annually in England at that time — 10 times fewer than in Germany — and this was not without consequences. Höffner believes it was the chronically weak book market that caused England, the colonial power, to fritter away its head start within the span of a century, while the underdeveloped agrarian state of Germany caught up rapidly, becoming an equally developed industrial nation by 1900.
Even more startling is the factor Höffner believes caused this development — in his view, it was none other than copyright law, which was established early in Great Britain, in 1710, that crippled the world of knowledge in the United Kingdom.
Germany, on the other hand, didn’t bother with the concept of copyright for a long time. Prussia, then by far Germany’s biggest state, introduced a copyright law in 1837, but Germany’s continued division into small states meant that it was hardly possible to enforce the law throughout the empire.
Höffner’s diligent research is the first academic work to examine the effects of the copyright over a comparatively long period of time and based on a direct comparison between two countries, and his findings have caused a stir among academics. Until now, copyright was seen as a great achievement and a guarantee for a flourishing book market. Authors are only motivated to write, runs the conventional belief, if they know their rights will be protected.
Yet a historical comparison, at least, reaches a different conclusion. Publishers in England exploited their monopoly shamelessly. New discoveries were generally published in limited editions of at most 750 copies and sold at a price that often exceeded the weekly salary of an educated worker.
London’s most prominent publishers made very good money with this system, some driving around the city in gilt carriages. Their customers were the wealthy and the nobility, and their books regarded as pure luxury goods. In the few libraries that did exist, the valuable volumes were chained to the shelves to protect them from potential thieves.
In Germany during the same period, publishers had plagiarizers — who could reprint each new publication and sell it cheaply without fear of punishment — breathing down their necks. Successful publishers were the ones who took a sophisticated approach in reaction to these copycats and devised a form of publication still common today, issuing fancy editions for their wealthy customers and low-priced paperbacks for the masses.
Comentário: Bem contra que quase todos pensam - não só no Brasil. Mas tem atualmente um forte movimento em favor abolir direitos autoriais, patentes, copyrights, etc.

Desenvolvimento econômico e preferência de tempo
“…. (T)he process of economic development is essentially determined by time preference… nature-given resources or technological know-how can only have an economic impact if discovered and utilized. To do his, though, there must be prior savings and investment. It is not the availability of resources and technical or scientific knowledge that imposes limits of economic advancement: rather, it is time preference that imposes limits on the exploitation of actually available resources as well as on the utilization of existing knowledge (and also on scientific progress for that matter, insofar as research activities, too, must be supported by saved-up funds).” p 151

Análise institucional dos mercados financeiros
July 14, 2009 No Comments
This paper proposes that bubbles can be understood as being episodes of institutional logic. Or as Buffett would say driven by the “institutional imperative. ”Abstract (Via Levine & Zajac @ AeaWeb)
Financial bubbles remain a challenge for economic theory. Puzzlingly, bubbles occur not only in real-world markets, with their inherent uncertainty and noise, but also in highly controlled experimental markets, even when uncertainty is eliminated and calculating the expected returns should be a simple statistical exercise. We propose that bubbles can be understood as episodes of institutional logic. Such logic has been shown to play a pervasive role in the spread of beliefs, behavior, and practices among individuals and organizations, both in laboratory and field studies. We examine experimentally two alternative explanations for the appearance of bubbles: 1) that participants lack knowledge and eventually learn to price correctly and 2) that each participant overconfidently believes that her understanding of the situation is better than average. We find lack of support for either, and show that the appearance of bubbles is congruent with institutionalization processes, similar to those observed elsewhere in financial markets and organizations.
Excerpts (Via Levine & Zajac @ AeaWeb)
The existence of a market bubbles seems at odds with common assumptions regarding the efficiency of financial markets. Even more puzzling is the finding that bubbles occur not only in real-world markets, with their inherent uncertainty and noise, but also in highly predictable experimental markets (e.g. Vernon L. Smith et al., 1988).
