Sadly, Mrs May’s sacrifice does nothing to solve Britain’s Brexit mess. Her resignation depends on Parliament voting through her deal after two crushing defeats. Even if she succeeds (a very big if), Parliament remains hopelessly divided about Britain’s future relationship with Europe. If her deal fails and Parliament forces its own alternative on her, she could resist. If she goes, the next prime minister’s Brexit plan will have no popular mandate. Brexit remains as radically uncertain as it has ever been.
