One of the great problems we have in economics is that we’re not really very good at measuring that great chaos out there which is the economy. We’ve never been very good at it and the problem has only got worse–the economy changes faster than our methods of measurement. An example of this is “business investment in software” which people have been using to try and measure the impact of computers on business. As one Goldman Sachs report stated, not a lot apparently. The problem with this measure being that there’s now this software as a service and Saas is business buying computing services rather than investing in computer hardware and software.
