Today is Friedrich A. Hayek’s birthday. Hayek was born on May 8, 1899. In the photo, Hayek looks on with a kind smile on his face during the 1974 Nobel Prize ceremonies at which he received his own prize in economics, while the Soviet dissent, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, is given his belated Nobel award for literature.
Given the recent fawning over Karl Marx with the marking of the 200th anniversary of his birth, it is perhaps worth remembering the economic, political and moral message of Hayek’s, “The Road to Serfdom”(1944), that comprehensive socialist central planning leads not only to economic disaster, but the potential for a terrible tyranny when everything is controlled and commanded by the State.
