Market capitalism has done more to lift more people out of poverty and oppression than socialism, democratic or otherwise, has or will ever do. And it's not even close.
And where economies are mostly characterized by market capitalism, the most oppressive elements of those societies, especially the causes of long-term poverty and lack of upward mobility, are precisely those areas where the state has outlawed or restricted capitalist acts between consenting adults. For example: occupational licensure, minimum wage laws, zoning and related restrictions, the War on Drugs, and a million forms of rent-seeking.
