Rothbard had some interesting insights into the origins of the welfare state via "Yankee Postmillenialism Pietists." These were descendents of the Puritans who, over the decades, traded their Calvinist doctrine for Arminian doctrine. And then, over more decades, traded their belief in Jesus Christ for belief in the Savior State. Those changes in doctrine subsequently led to the political debacle we see today.
