UFS abre respositório de artigos

Professores efetivos já podem disponibilizar suas publicações
Projeto visa uma melhor divulgação das produções científicas dos docentes da UFS

Professores efetivos da Universidade Federal de Sergipe já podem disponibilizar suas produções científicas no Repositório Institucional (RIUFS). O projeto do acervo digital foi proposto pela Resolução nº 40/2010 CONEPE e tem como objetivos armazenar, preservar e disseminar amplamente a produção intelectual e os resultados de pesquisas desenvolvidas pelos diversos setores em uma base de dados eletrônica de acesso livre.

Nos mais diversos países, instituições acadêmicas utilizam repositórios institucionais e o acesso aberto para gerenciar informação científica proveniente das atividades de pesquisa e ensino e oferecem apoio a elas. Dessa forma, dentre outros fatores, os repositórios têm sido de significativa importância para melhorar a comunicação científica interna e externa à instituição e contribuir para o aumento do prestígio da mesma e do pesquisador.

Como benefícios, os docentes terão compactadas em um único endereço eletrônico todas as suas produções científicas (artigos científicos, livros, dissertações e trabalhos apresentados em congressos), facilitando o seu gerenciamento, uma vez que muitas dessas produções estão disponíveis em páginas pessoais na internet.

“É importante que os professores participem do Repositório e criem o hábito de disseminar suas publicações para toda a comunidade. A pesquisa é para ser divulgada e todos ganham com isso”, salienta Letícia Castro, bibliotecária da Bicen e uma das responsáveis pelo projeto.

Os interessados devem acessar o site do repositório e se dirigir ao campo “informações para autores”, estando atento às determinações para a inclusão do material.

O futuro da educação

Skyler Collins explica: "... Over the last decade, colleges and universities have begun offering their programs over the Internet. Virtual classrooms have been replacing the traditional classroom. Unfortunately, thanks to government intervention in education, tuition is still astronomically high, but I believe that the Internet is starting to force a major change. Enter Khan Academy and the University of the People. Khan Academy is a collection of over 2400 free instructional videos on subjects ranging from Algebra to Finance to Biology, and their database is growing. The University of the People is a virtual college devoted to tuition-free higher education. They currently offer Bachelor programs in Business Administration and Computer Science
 
What both institutions demonstrate is just how feasible it is to create and receive  a quality education over the Internet. I predict that both institutions are just the beginning of yet another paradigm shift, this time in higher education. No longer would a professor need to spend countless hours lecturing students. He could simply record his lectures (or use others'), assign them as homework, and use classroom time, either traditional or virtual, for discussion. In other words, both teaching and learning are becoming more efficient...."

Power is the primary menace to peace, freedom, and civilization--such is the lesson we learn from the great works of literature, philosophy, and history. Why then do we tolerate it? In the last ten years, a new school of sociology has grown up that sees science as not only relativistic but as a purely human construct; that ties scientists' findings about "nature" to their standing in the cultural and political milieu of which they are a part. Steven Shapin adds to this revisionist literature with a fascinating, paradoxical book that at once questions our notions of the scientific revolution of the last century and deepens our understanding of it. "There was no such thing as the Scientific Revolution, and this is a book about it," says Shapin, a professor of sociology at U.C., San Diego in his introduction, "There was, rather, a diverse array of cultural practices aimed at understanding explaining, and controlling the natural world." Shapin's treatise on the currents that engendered modern science is a combination of history and philosophy of science for the interested and educated layperson, and it is indeed considerably more readable than many of the other philosophy of science books currently available. Several puzzling aspects of the writings of 16th- and 17th-century scientists are put into new perspective in his section titled: "Science as Religion's Handmaid." There are three basic sections of the book: "What Was Known?" covers major differences between the "new knowledge" of the scientific revolution and received wisdom of the ancients.

R. Hardy explica: "Copernicus is not someone you would have picked to make an astronomical revolution. He did not have obvious ambition; he was a scholar, and he wanted to do his researches and to be left alone. His researches were not even professional; he was an astronomer by avocation. He was trained as a doctor (he was trusted as a healer), and had official duties as a canon in the Catholic church. His attack on the Earth-centered picture of the solar system was mathematical, and his complicated computations had the benefit of being simpler than those required for the geocentric model. Copernicus had the ideas, and the mathematics behind them, but he did not publish. He was busy with his canon's duties and did not have the scholastic's freedom to devote all his time to his studies or publications. He was worried that his theory might be wrong in places, or at best was incomplete, so he kept quiet about it. When his ideas leaked out, they brought him unwanted attention, so that his supervisor heard about the mistress he kept and ordered her out, and also he became associated with the Lutherans who were gaining numbers at the time. It was, indeed, a Lutheran who teamed up with Copernicus to see the treatise _On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres_ prepared for print.

Grade 7 Up-This readable biography puts Kepler's life, discoveries, and writings in the context of the religious persecutions of the early 17th century and shows how his religious bias led him to make great scientific discoveries. Personal anecdotes about such topics as his relationship with fellow astronomer Tycho Brahe, his mother's trial for witchcraft, and his lifetime of work on the Rudolfine Tables fill the narrative. The writing is strongest when dealing with his discoveries, as the descriptions of his personal life sometimes seem tedious and repetitive. Excellent boxed sections explain the astronomer's three laws of planetary motion with clear diagrams that illustrate their principles and derivation. A compelling passage summarizes the Somnium (The Dream), a fictional work in which he created moon creatures to explain the motion of the earth in a heliocentric system. This book is enhanced with fascinating and informative reproductions, including facsimiles of Kepler's writings. Overall, an enjoyable introduction to a complex scientific life.

This intriguing biography from the Oxford Portraits in Science series discusses the life and work of Johannes Kepler (1571^-1630). Trained in theology, Kepler accepted a position as a mathematics teacher. He then went to the assistance of noted astronomer Tycho Brahe and became the imperial mathematician for Rudolf II of the Holy Roman Empire. Kepler lived in tumultuous times and suffered the religious persecution of his family and the trial of his mother for witchcraft, along with disease, war, and the deaths of loved ones. Nevertheless, he managed to discover the three laws of planetary motion, to calculate the movements and positions of the planets with great accuracy, and to do important work in optics as well. Voelkel weaves the many strands of Kepler's story into an intricate but satisfying narrative. To be illustrated with reproductions of period portraits, prints, and documents. Thomas Kuhn (1922-1996) argued that scientific advancement is not evolutionary, but rather is a "series of peaceful interludes punctuated by intellectually violent revolutions", and in those revolutions "one conceptual world view is replaced by another". The University of Chicago Press has released The Structure Of Scientific Revolutions to the benefit of all students of the history of science, philosophy, and the impact of science on society (and society on the development of science). If every there were a true classic on the history and development of science that is "must" reading for each new generation, it is Kuhn's benchmark work, The Structure Of Scientific Revolutions. -- Midwest Book Review

Abstract
The aim of this article is to discuss the relationship between economic sociology and economic
policies. In the last decades, economic sociology has made significant achievements in terms of
theory and research, but that its influence on policies has remained weak. While this was inevitable in earlier decades, when scholars had to concentrate most of their effort  on defining the role
and contribution of economic sociology, it has since become a constraint for the institutionalization and recognition of the discipline. The return to economic sociology, since the 1980s, has
brought about important theoretical achievements, especially in the analysis of economic organization at the micro level in terms of social and cultural embeddedness. The role of social relations
in contemporary economy has clearly emerged, but its implications for policies to promote economic development have remained more latent so far. Although a weaker institutionalization
and a poorer connection to policy-making certainly affect the political influence of economic sociology in comparison to economics, the paper focuses on the research perspective. A shift of the
research focus from the statics to the dynamics of economic organization could be useful. In this
framework, particular attention is drawn to the study of local development and innovation
through a closer relationship of economic sociology with comparative political economy. A separation between these two approaches does not favor a full exploitation of the potential contribution of economic sociology to policies.

Abstract

In this paper we review the extant innovation research from three fields--economics, organizational sociology and technology management--in order to find points at which the fields' approaches and assumptions overlap. By comparing research methods and approaches along three dimensions, stage of adoption, level of analysis, and type of innovation, we found, firstly, that studies from the three fields can be re-mapped into five more specific groups. We then illustrate how research from different groups can be cross-fertilized to help management of innovation in organizations. The paper suggests that knowing the ways in which different groups of studies differ from each other may lead to a more accurate understanding of the relative value of innovation research from each group, for both theorists and managers.

ideas which can be evaluated (intern/extern) with IT-solutions (Open Evaluation). And in part three it is
argued, that crowdfunding can overcome the barriers between economy and sociology.

What is a PhD at the CSI ?

PhD students participate in the scientific life of the CSI, are part of its research team, collaborate in teaching activities and in research projects, present communications in national and international conferences. They participate regularly in the CSI's research workshop. They benefit from research funding (generally in the form of a scholarship) that allows them to work full time on their scientific activities. They are supervised by CSI researchers that help them with their research.

The doctorate diploma is delivered by the Ecole des Mines de Paris (MINES ParisTech), within the framework of theEOS (Economie, Organisation, Société) doctoral school. The official name of the diploma is of Doctorate in "Socio-economics of innovation".

What is the PhD about ?

The doctoral research project is in direct relation with the current research topics at the CSI and with the skills and activities of the CSI researchers. The topic of the project is defined in collaboration with the PhD supervisor and takes into account the different funding constraints (partnership contracts, targeted calls).

How to become a PhD student at the CSI ?

The CSI publishes regularly calls for applications to its doctoral program, usually in connection with available scholarships. The CSI is also open to spontaneous candidacy, also to be associated to perspectives of potential funding.

PhD candidates need to meet the necessary institutional requisites for the enrollment into a PhD program in France. They need to propose a pre-project adapted to the research and approaches elaborated within the CSI, and connected to the academic disciplines of reference at the CSI: science and technology studies, political sociology, cultural anthropology, management of innovation, communication studies, economic sociology, etc. They also need to prove academic excellence in their domain of specialization.

O triunfo das finanças e o declínio de América

A vividly told history of how greed bred America’s economic ills over the last forty years, and of the men most responsible for them.

"The Great Stagnation" offers a very concise and well thought-out essay on the relationship between innovation and prosperity. The first chapter, which shows how median incomes have stagnated in recent years as the economy's "low hanging fruit" has gotten scarce is especially well done. The parts on health care and education are also very good.
Cowen's central idea is that the pace of innovation has slowed, and that we are now on a "technological plateau" that makes further growth challenging. If you consider technology in the broad sense (energy, transportation, home, etc), this makes sense as things have not changed a lot in recent decades. However, I think it is also true that progress has been highly concentrated in information technology and communications, and that things continue to advance rapidly in this area. Cowen notes this but seems to feel that the Internet is the only really major innovation.
Cowen argues that what we need is a new burst of innovation that will propel economic growth. Here is the problem I see with that: Cowen writes that "a lot of our major innovations are springing up in sectors where a lot of work is done by machines, not by human beings." In fact if you look at companies like Google or Facebook, or entire industries like semiconductors, computers, Internet or biotech, there are really not a lot of jobs in total and certainly not a lot for middle skill people. If there is manufacturing it is either heavily automated or offshore.
The question is: if today's innovations are already creating industries that are not labor-intensive and rely instead on technology, why would the future be different? Won't the new burst of innovation that Cowen calls for create even more technology-intensive industries...and few jobs?

"...  Prohibition itself went into effect on Jan. 1, 1920.
But people continued to drink—and in large quantities. Alcoholism rates soared during the 1920s; insurance companies charted the increase at more than 300 more percent. Speakeasies promptly opened for business. By the decade's end, some 30,000 existed in New York City alone. Street gangs grew into bootlegging empires built on smuggling, stealing, and manufacturing illegal alcohol. The country's defiant response to the new laws shocked those who sincerely (and naively) believed that the amendment would usher in a new era of upright behavior....
Frustrated that people continued to consume so much alcohol even after it was banned, federal officials had decided to try a different kind of enforcement. They ordered the poisoning of industrial alcohols manufactured in the United States, products regularly stolen by bootleggers and resold as drinkable spirits. The idea was to scare people into giving up illicit drinking. Instead, by the time Prohibition ended in 1933, the federal poisoning program, by some estimates, had killed at least 10,000 people..."

Professores efetivos já podem disponibilizar suas publicações
Professores efetivos da Universidade Federal de Sergipe já podem disponibilizar suas produções científicas no Repositório Institucional (RIUFS). O projeto do acervo digital foi proposto pela Resolução nº 40/2010 CONEPE e tem como objetivos armazenar, preservar e disseminar amplamente a produção intelectual e os resultados de pesquisas desenvolvidas pelos diversos setores em uma base de dados eletrônica de acesso livre.
Nos mais diversos países, instituições acadêmicas utilizam repositórios institucionais e o acesso aberto para gerenciar informação científica proveniente das atividades de pesquisa e ensino e oferecem apoio a elas. Dessa forma, dentre outros fatores, os repositórios têm sido de significativa importância para melhorar a comunicação científica interna e externa à instituição e contribuir para o aumento do prestígio da mesma e do pesquisador.
Como benefícios, os docentes terão compactadas em um único endereço eletrônico todas as suas produções científicas (artigos científicos, livros, dissertações e trabalhos apresentados em congressos), facilitando o seu gerenciamento, uma vez que muitas dessas produções estão disponíveis em páginas pessoais na internet.
“É importante que os professores participem do Repositório e criem o hábito de disseminar suas publicações para toda a comunidade. A pesquisa é para ser divulgada e todos ganham com isso”, salienta Letícia Castro, bibliotecária da Bicen e uma das responsáveis pelo projeto.
Os interessados devem acessar o site do repositório e se dirigir ao campo “informações para autores”, estando atento às determinações para a inclusão do material.
