This article reviews beer production, consumption and the industrial organization of breweries throughout history. Monasteries were the centers of the beer economy in the early Middle Ages. Innovation and increased demand later induced the growth of commercial breweries. Globalization and scientific discoveries transformed the beer industry and increased competition from the 16th through the 19th century. The 20th century was characterized by dramatic (domestic and international) consolidation, major shifts in consumption patterns, and the re-emergence of small breweries.

Dann, plötzlich, schossen die Zinsen ohne Vorwarnung durch die Decke. Inzwischen trifft es auch Frankreich, und selbst die grundsoliden Holländer mussten sich vergangene Woche plötzlich Sorgen machen. Die Krise scheint die Krise zu nähren, ohne dass die Anleihenbesitzer auch nur kurz zum Überlegen innehalten.

It's easy to think sometimes that a new government program, law, or regulation could cure a pressing social problem.
Whether it's a desire to end abortions, keep the wrong people out of the country, make your city drug-free, stop corporate frauds, crack down on criminals, or make health care more accessible and less expensive, you can imagine how the right new law could make everything okay.
But when you get that kind of thought, I hope you'll remember the seven principles that apply to all government programs — not just the ones you oppose.
