Brazilian regional identities and cultures
Some Brazilian regional identities and cultural segments. Of course today most people that live in cities tend to be globalized and so, but they retain many aspects of the regional cultures from where they ancestors lived before the rural exodus in the 1950s.
Many sociologists divided Brazil in distinct regions regarding the inhabitants culture and habits. The most renowned work about this subject was made by Darcy Ribeiro (O Povo Brasileiro/The Brazilian People), where he divided Brazil in four major cultural regions: "Caipira", "Caboclo", "Sertanejo", "Gaúcho/Sulino". Other intelectuals from the late 19th/early 20th century wrote about their or someone else regions distinctive cultural traits, like José de Alencar (wrote about the gaúcho, altough very biased, since he was from the Northeast), Sílvio Romero, Monteiro Lobato (caipira) and Euclides da Cunha (from Rio de Janeiro, but wrote something about the caipira from São Paulo, when living in Lorena, São Paulo state, and about the sertanejo from the interior of the Northeast Region, when he was covering the Canudos Rebellion in Canudos, Bahia state).
