A REASSESSMENT OF ERIC VOEGELIN’S POLITICAL THEORY
Eric Voegelin (1901-85) is most famous for his argument that the modern age is best understood as a revival, in modified form, of the ancient religious movement referred to as Gnosticism. Voegelin argues that the typical forms of modern consciousness correspond strikingly to the gnostic consciousness pervasive in late antiquity, and that modern politics is essentially a secularized form of the gnostic attempt to achieve self-salvation through esoteric knowledge, ultimately rejecting any limits on human attempts to create heaven on earth...
