In the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), Brazil is ranked 53rd out of 65 countries on an overall reading scale. India and South Africa did not take part in the survey but Brazil falls some way behind Russia and Macao (as a proxy for China) and is better in Latin America only than Argentina and Peru.
